Have Extra Room in Your Dishwasher? Throw These Items in There Too

Based on its name alone, your dishwasher is most often considered a tool for, well, washing dishes. However, most people fail to realize its true potential. It’s literally a cleaning machine, using hot water and soap. Almost anything that could feasibly be cleaned by those things could theoretically be put in the dishwasher if you have the space.

Almost anything that isn’t susceptible to being damaged by heat or water can be cleaned in the dishwasher without too much concern. Of course, we understand that you might want a little more to go on than that, but don’t worry: we’ll give you specifics about what types of items you could put in your dishwasher without worry.

Kitchen Tools

Of course, you will put dishes and utensils in the dishwasher, but there are actually a lot of other items in your kitchen that can be cleaned in the dishwasher if it just crossed your mind to do so. For instance, you can wash sponges and brushes, microwave turntables, silicone oven mitts, ceramic handles from your drawers or cabinets, and a lot more.

Are your refrigerator shelves and bins sticky or dirty? Those can go in the dishwasher. Kitchen exhaust fan filter a little worse for wear? You can wash that in there too. Take a look around your kitchen for things that need to be clean, and you’ll probably find a surprising number of options for putting in the dishwasher.

Home Decor

For most people, it never even crosses their minds to put home decor in the dishwasher. It just sounds crazy on the surface. But it actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it. A lot of home decor is hard surface objects that can easily be cleaned in the dishwasher. Vases and light fixtures are prime examples.

Of course, there are some caveats: you don’t want to risk chipping or color fading on fancier pieces, but simple vases are perfectly fine. Small trashcans, desk organizers, and even the outlet covers around the house are also neat little things you could put in the dishwasher. Whatever needs cleaning, so long as it is in no danger of melting or being otherwise damaged, your dishwasher can definitely handle it.

Bathroom Items

Bathrooms tend to have many things that could easily be cleaned in a dishwasher. For instance, soap and toothbrush holders often get grimy or dirty, and could benefit from such a cleaning. If you use a rubber tub mat in your bathtub, that too could safely be put in the dishwasher.

Even the items you use to clean your own body can be put in the dishwasher without fear of causing too much trouble. That includes items such as brushes, shower poofs, and sponges. If you really want to, you could even remove the exhaust fan cover and let that get a good round of cleaning as well.

Grooming Tools

Most grooming tools are solid metal objects, such as razors, clippers, and in some cases, even hairbrushes. That said, we wouldn’t recommend most hairbrushes, since getting too much hair in the dishwasher might clog something up. Moreover, natural bristles and wooden handles wouldn’t fare very well in there.

But for all of those other solid metal grooming tools? Feel free to toss them in the dishwasher if you have enough space to do so! Anything that isn’t going to be melted by hot water or clog up the drain with its filth is fair game for your dishwasher, even things you absolutely would not expect.
