An air fryer is a popular appliance that has a lot of different functions, but when it comes to making French fries, people are often skeptical that an air fryer can make the same flavor as a restaurant. Can an air fryer make great-tasting fries?
An air fryer can be used in a variety of recipes to make great-tasting French fries. They taste similar to the traditional deep-fried French fries but are typically less greasy than restaurant style ones.
As it turns out, French fries can be just as good when you make them at home, and you can save on a good amount of fat while making them as well. The rest of this article will discuss whether you can make delicious French fries with an air fryer.
Do Air Fryers Actually Work?
Air fryers have been a pretty hot ticket item in the home appliance market as of late, and many kinds of food that are traditionally deep fried can be successfully replicated with an air fryer. It should be noted that air fryers certainly aren’t the healthiest way to cook your food, but they do have an advantage over deep frying since they use less oil.
Surprisingly, air fryers work on the same principle as convection ovens: a metal coil in the cooking chamber produces heat, and the exhaust fan circulates the hot air evenly throughout the interior of the air fryer.
Unlike a convection oven, the air fryer circulates hot air much faster, quite similarly to the way a coating of oil rapidly heats food.
Can an Air Fryer Make Good Fries?
If you get a good quality air fryer and don’t overcook your batch of fries, it’s certainly possible to achieve that beautiful golden-brown color, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Air fryers are particularly good at making sweet potato fries. Due to a lower starch content, baking sweet potato fries is impractical, but air frying works perfectly.
How to Make French Fries with an Air Fryer
Making French fries with an air fryer couldn’t be easier. All you need are Russet potatoes, salt, oil, and spices. For the spices, you can add a pinch of cayenne for heat, but garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika work wonderfully as well. To whip up a batch of delicious fries, follow these steps.
- Cut the potatoes into thin strips.
- Take the uncooked fries and put them in a bowl of cold water for five minutes. Drain out the water, then cover them with boiling water. After 10 minutes has elapsed, drain and dry off the potatoes.
- Once the potatoes are cool, move to a mixing bowl and toss with oil and your preferred seasoning.
- Layer your fries in the basket and cook for 15 minutes. After that time, remove them, toss again, and put them back in for another 10 minutes. Season them with salt, and you’re all set to enjoy delicious air fried French fries!
