ROSS-ON-WYE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS 2010...............

Ross Christmas lights were officially switched on at 5.30 on Friday evening by Ross Mayor, Councillor Jo Lane following an hour of Christmas entertainment at Ross Market House which was provided by Ross Town Band, the Y-zone group '2Faced' and members of the scouting group. Timing the switch-on for all of the lights about town would have been an impossible task to co-ordinate and so just those on the market building itself were switched on by the Mayor.

This year's energy saving LED lights look very Christmassy and many shops in town have added to the display by decorating their own premises. More will be added to the display as we approach the Christmas period and will make Ross a welcoming place to visit for seasonal shopping.

The moon added to Friday's light show as can be seen in the film of the displays about town. Fog forming later added to the Christmas atmosphere and the town looked (looks) very pretty. The Christmas lights time lapse sequence below is set to the Welsh folk song, 'Ar Hyd y Nos' (All Through The Night).

WELSH ENGLISH (not a direct translation)

Holl amrantau'r sÍr ddywedant
Ar hyd y nos
Dyma'r ffordd i fro gogoniant
Ar hyd y nos.
Golau arall yw tywyllwch
I arddangos gwir brydferthwch
Teulu'r nefoedd mewn tawelwch
Ar hyd y nos.

O mor siriol, gwena seren
Ar hyd y nos
I oleuo'i chwaer ddaearen
Ar hyd y nos.
Nos yw henaint pan ddaw cystudd
Ond i harddu dyn a'i hwyrddydd
Rhown ein golau gwan da'n gilydd
Ar hyd y nos.

Sleep my child and peace attend thee,
All through the night
Guardian angels God will send thee,
All through the night
Soft the drowsy hours are creeping
Hill and vale in slumber steeping,
I my loving vigil keeping
All through the night.

While the moon her watch is keeping
All through the night
While the weary world is sleeping
All through the night
O'er thy spirit gently stealing
Visions of delight revealing
Breathes a pure and holy feeling
All through the night.
