After a bonus point win the previous weekend, Ross travelled to Tewkesbury with high hopes of adding another league win. However a committed and smart Tewkesbury outfit delivered a professional 80 minutes of rugby running out comfortable winners.

Tewkesbury did convert an early penalty opportunity to take a 3-0 lead but for the first quarter, it was Ross that had the majority of possession and territory, and looked the most likely to score the opening try. Twice Ross had scrums in the Tewkesbury twenty two, yet on both occasions they were penalized for wheeling. This gave Tewkesbury the breathing space to clear their lines.

As the game entered the second quarter the score remained 3-0, yet with Ross exerting the pressure. Then completely against the run of play, the Tewkesbury blind sided cantered over to score. Ross looked to have control of a ruck 30 metres out when the Tewkesbury 6 picked up the loose ball and ran unchallenged to score. The Tewkesbury 10 converted, giving them a 10-0 lead. This knocked the stuffing out of Ross and on the stroke of half time, Tewkesbury extended their lead with a penalty taking them to 13-0 ahead.

With a breeze at their backs in the second half, the Tewkesbury 10 played a very successful territory game, putting Ross deep in their 22 at every opportunity. This forced Ross to chase the game. When they did get ball in hand, Chay Brine, Casey Morgan and Gareth Holdsworth looked dangerous. However, with their tails up the Tewkesbury defence were able to sniff out every opportunity.

With Ross being forced back into their twenty two, Tewkesbury delivered three second half tries, all coming from driving line outs which put the home team out of sight. In open play, Ross continued to compete with Gavin Oates turning over Tewkesbury ball at will. However, it was too late for a fight back and the final score brought sober viewing to the Ross squad. The Terrys Digital Ross man of the match was Gavin Oates for his tireless display in the loose.

Next Saturday, Ross 1st XV have a weekend off but Ross 2nds are playing against Longlevens at Wilton Sports Ground. Kick off is at 3pm.
