Ross kick started their season last weekend with a fine win over a youthful Brockworth side.

Ross started strongly and after a couple of quick drives on half way, two dummy runners of Chay Brine enabled Adam Clements to hit a perfect line through the Brockworth midfield. Great support from Baz 'the hunt' Parker took the ball into the Brockworth 22, where he showed good vision to flip the ball back to Adam who walked the ball in under the posts. This gave Ross some confidence in moving the ball and the next 5 minutes saw them camp in the Brockworth half, with strong work from Dave Mince and Wayne Williams around the fringes. However, a lost ball at contact enabled Brockworth to turn the ball over and move it wide, where a series of quick passes meant the right wing touched the ball down under the posts. The ball was converted and this gave them a 7 - 5 lead which they hardly deserved.

Ross responded well, however and after a good kick chase saw the Brockworth full back get turned over on their 22, Gavin Oates showed good skills to pick up and dive under the posts. This turned the advantage back to Ross. A strong defensive effort for the last 10 minutes of the half with a couple of important tackles from Hugh Bellamy, Gareth Holdsworth and Donkey Davies saw Ross hold Brockworth out and turn around at the break with a 12 - 7 lead.

Ross continued to dominate field position and were unfortunate to not score after 15 minutes of the 2nd half when it looked like Michael Davies had scored, but the referee adjudged the ball to be held up. A slight change to the front row saw Tony Clements come on and from the next scrum, a strong push enabled Donkey to score. This gave Ross a 17 - 7 lead. As Brockworth chased the game Ross started to give away field position and lose possession. However Ross continued to defend strongly as they had throughout the game and some crunching tackles from Festa, Troy and Casey saw Ross turn Brockworth back over again and again to relieve pressure.

As the game drew to a close, a stolen lineout saw the back row work in unison to leave Gavin 'Andrew' Oates to beat 3 defenders from the half way and show Clint Jackson like speed to score. This confirmed the win, as well as giving Ross an excellent bonus point. The last 2 minutes saw Brockworth try to get a consolation score, but an excellent try-saving tackle from Josh Morgan saw Ross hold out and despite a great turnover by Hugh Bellamy and then break out with a 3 on 1 on the half way, the final pass went forward and the game was over.

This was an excellent all round performance and due to this there was no man of the match. However, special mention should go to Matthew Jones who had his best game in a number of years and Pickles who is getting more and more comfortable at this level.
