Ross were looking to open their league account on Saturday after a closing day loss to Widden old Boys. However, once again they came up just short, losing to Bristol side, Colstonians 13-0.

It was the home side that looked the most likely to score early on, however a strong Ross defence forced enough Colstonians errors to ensure that they never really threatened the Ross line. With scrum and lineout working well, Ross began to grow in confidence as the game entered the 2nd quarter. Fly half, Chay Brine began to find some great territory with his clearing kicks and Centre, Casey Morganís strong running was proving a handful for the Colstonians defence. However they could not find that killer pass to open the scoring.

With the first half coming to a close, it was the Colstonians who finally opened the scoring. Ross Centre, Bas Parker was tackled without the ball and Ross were awarded a penalty but, mysteriously the ref reversed the decision for Ross back chat. In the confusion, the Colstonians took a quick penalty and scored wide out on the right to take a 5-0 lead into the half time break.

Playing up hill and against the elements in the 2nd half, Ross needed an early score. With Dave Mince and Gavin Oates punching holes in the defence close in and Josh Morgan looking dangerous out wide, it looked as if Ross would open their score sheet. However, once again Ross fell foul of the refs whistle, the Colstonians cleared their lines from the ensuing line out and scored in the corner to take a 10-0 lead. A further penalty saw them then move out to 13-0 and the game was effectively over.

Ross continued to work hard and were close to scoring on a number of occasions, but the game petered out with Ross falling short once again.

The Walford timber man of the match was Captain, Gavin Oates for once again a tireless display in defence. Ross 1st XV take on League leaders Old Richians next Saturday, 25th September at Wilton Sports Ground. Kick off is at 3pm. Ross 2nd Xv open their League season away to Ledbury.
