Ross Town Carnival

Carnival Chairman Mel Hodges had a very early start to his day on Saturday 6th August, around 5:30 am I believe! He was up at the crack of dawn to start the setting up of the Carnival field at the Caroline Symonds Gardens and to direct the many visiting stall holders to their respective pitches. The scene unfolded into a very colourful affair, with cake stalls and tombola, burger bars, Bar bars, an ice cream van, a variety of side shows and a display of vintage vehicles.

The judging of the Carnival floats took place at the Ashburton Industrial Estate at 12:15, the results of which are published below the photographs. Apparently the judges, from Park End had a very difficult job deciding the winners. The entrants in some categories were so good the judges had to award a joint third place and a joint second place.

The streets were crowded as the procession of floats made it's way through Ross-on-Wye town centre and down to the field. There were pirates and Pinocchio, scary people and the toothpaste fairy, Lord Nelson and Ross Sea Cadets, a matador and Flamenco dancer, Ross Phoenix Majorettes, and some very eye catching belly dancers amongst many others who took part in this event.

Selecting photographs of the day to put on this page was very difficult as all of the entries into the procession were good and colourful, so I have just used seven here but there are a further 185, including all presentations, which can be viewed as a slide show in the photo gallery.

Ross in Bloom Results

The results from Ross-in-Bloom have now been analysed and sorted for most of the local competitions. Those still outstanding, which are ongoing, are for the Best Street, the Overall Winner of the Gardens, Adopt-a-Box and the Community Spirit Award for Outstanding Contributions to Ross in 2005. All winners have been notified of their results and the primary winners will be invited to attend the Presentation Evening in September to accept their certificates and awards.

Full listings of the results so far will be printed in the press over the next few weeks. A reference list is available for all to see in the Heritage Centre.

The result of the Heart of England in Bloom judging will be announced on 2nd September in Stoke on Trent. Members of Ross-in-Bloom will be travelling there to hear this year's results.
