Crowds eagerly awaited Ross-on-Wye Carnival procession this year on Saturday, 7th August, which was a beautifully hot and sunny day, much more in keeping with the type of weather to be expected during the summer months. Behind the scenes, the day's work had begun on the carnival riverside field at a very misty 6 am, with the setting up of the many stalls and sideshows for the crowds to enjoy later on in the afternoon.

Judging the various floats took place before the parade, on the Ashburton Estate during the morning. The judges were Pam Skinner, Margaret Cole, Phyllis Christopher and Vere Christopher of Mitcheldean Carnival Committee. A great effort had been made by all entrants but the various winners were as follows:

In the class 1 category, first place was taken by Ross Preschool Playgroup with 'Happy Birthday Peter Pan'. The Lea were judged second place with 'Shrek' and third, Ross Conservative Association with 'Garden Party'.

In class 2, The Davies family came first with their 'Easter Bonnet,' second were Ross Recycling and third, Ross Library.

The Gresleys were first in class 3 with 'Countdown to Christmas.' Second were Ross Dynamos and third, Ross Ramblers with 'Do it in Stile'.

In first place of the class 4 category was Wizard of Oz (Lisa Dean) and second, Funky Caterpillar (I Murray). Joint third places were won by Bookworm (Vicki Gardner) and Slipknot.

101 Dalmatians (Debbie Brace) were class five winners. Second were Rat Patrol and third Keith Walker.

The "guess the carnival clown's birthday" competition winner was Ryan Bethell (Age4) with, March 31st. James Ferry gave the carnival hedgehogs the names Ross, On and Wye.
